Windows 7 - Configuring User Account Control

In Windows Vista, User Account Control is a bane to administrators who want to enjoy having complete control over their computers without being bombarded by annoying prompts every time they want to install a program or change a system setting. Windows 7 introduced some welcome changes in the way that User Account Control works, including various new options and more useful features. While more experienced users will normally still want to disable the feature entirely, User Account Control does have its uses, especially on shared computers. The following guide will show you how to disable the feature entirely or configure it so that only administrators can bypass the controls.

1 – Disabling User Account Control
Disabling User Account Control entirely is not recommended unless you are an advanced user and the administrator of your computer. Disabling the feature will make your computer less secure, since it will be easier to change important system settings which you may not be completely familiar with.
Open your start menu and type "UAC" into the search box. Click "Change User Account Control settings." Drag the slider down to the lowest setting to completely disable the feature and click "OK" to continue. You'll also notice three other settings which are each explained when you move the slider.

2 – Disable User Account Control Only For Administrators
Administrators will rarely have any use for User Account Control, so it's generally preferable to disable it. In spite of this, you probably won't want other users of the computer being able to change important system settings or install programs or drivers which could cause system instability. This method only works with the Enterprise, Professional and Ultimate editions. Other editions do not include the Local Security Policy component which is required. To do this for other editions of Windows, you'll need to download a registry hack.
Type "secpol.msc" into the start menu search box and, in the left-hand pane, browse to "Local Polices > Security Options." Select "User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode." Double-click on the policy setting. From the drop-down box, choose "Elevate without prompting" and click "OK." Close the Local Security Policy editor.
