Windows 7 Tips and Tricks - How to Customize the Taskbar Notification Area

The area at the far right of the Windows 7 taskbar is known as the notification area. This section of the taskbar is used to display system messages and alerts, and to display icons for items that run in the background, like your virus scanning program or your wireless devices.

If you like, you can customize the appearance and functionality of that notification area. Customizing this area can make those notifications more useful and help you to be more productive. To customize the notification area of your Windows 7 taskbar just follow these instructions.
1. Right-click anywhere on the taskbar and choose Properties
2. Click Customize
3. Click each application you want to customize
4. Use the drop-down box to indicate whether you want the notifications to always be displayed, never be displayed or only be displayed when there is a change
5. Click OK to confirm your choices
