Windows 7 - How to Invert Colours

Inverting the colours on your monitor can be useful for making text more readable. This is especially the case when you are reading PDF files which display text that has been scanned in from print form. Inverted colours refer to turning the colours on the screen, or an area of the screen, into the opposite colour. For example, black text on a white background becomes white text on a black background instead. Some people find text easier to read when the colours are inverted while others just want to try it out of curiosity. Inverting colours in Windows 7 is easy and no changes to system settings are required. Follow the steps below to learn how to use the Magnifier accessibility feature to invert colours.

Open you start menu and type "magnify" into the start menu search box. Press enter or click on the "Magnify" application which appears in the top of the search results. When Magnifier opens, you'll be presented with a small window displaying a zoomed-in area of the screen. Moving your mouse around the screen will magnify a different area of the screen. If you don't want to zoom in on any area of the screen, just click the minus button until it zooms out to 100%.

Click on the gear icon to open the "Magnifier Preferences" option. Check the box beside "Turn on color inversion" and click "OK" to save the changes. The changes will take effect immediately and everything displayed in the Magnifier window will be in inverted colours.

If you want to be able to use this feature at any time with just a single click of the mouse, you should right-click on the Magnifier application on the taskbar. Choose the option "Pin to taskbar." From now on, you'll be able to access the Magnifier with a single click of the taskbar button. Your settings will be saved, so unless you change the colour inversion settings, the same display will always reappear whenever you reopen the application.

Once you're done with Magnifier, simply close it by clicking the cross button or pressing ALT and F4.
